THE THEMES OF BECKETT

TIME

REPETATIVE

CONFUSION

DEATH

FAITH

LONELINESS

TIME Beckett uses this theme most commonly in Waiting on Godot.  Time is what our lives are based around entirely.  We are constantlhy waiting and hurrying, where Samuel Beckett would probably consider that wasteful time.  Beckett possibly wanted to live each moment not waiting or worrying, but living.

REPETATIVE In many of Beckett's plays, a repatition occurs inthe acts.  Waiting for Godot, Endgame, and Act Without Words are all examples of repetative actions that occur in Beckett's plays.  Perhaps Beckett uses repetition purposefully, to show the action must be important or has greater meaning than first meets the eye.

CONFUSION Why does Beckett use the trend of making his characters seem confused, or even dumbfounded?  In Act Without Words and Waiting on Godot, there are characters that seem to have no brain.

DEATH Samuel Beckett usually brings up death at least once every single play he writes.  Maybe Beckett does this to claim that death is an inescapable circumstance that should not be avoided, but instead should be embraced.

FAITH Do you think that Samuel Beckett is a religious individual?  If not, then why does he bring up so many biblical topics in plays like Waiting for Godot, for example?  It is thought that he may be poking fun at people who take thier faith so seriously, letting it consume all of their time.

LONELINESS In many of Beckett's plays there are very few characters, ranging from four to one.  In addition, the characters always seem lonely and in a desolate area with little to no surroundings.  Perchance he wants the actors to have alone time to reflect on themselves or the others around them.
